Rage Case Study

Rage Systems gets extreme satisfaction from twin-monitor workstation.

Challenge

As a relatively small, portable, multimedia editing studio, Rage Systems needed high quality monitors that were lightweight,
compact and attractive enough to impress clients on the spot.

Solution

  • Rage Systems enlisted the help of TimeLine Designs, which suggested two VP191b monitors placed side by side.
  • TimeLine believed the VP191b monitors would provide more viewing area, more resolution, better contrast, better efficiency and cost less than one cinema display.
  • The need for portability and small size also contributed to the choice of LCD monitors.
Results

Rage Systems purchased a pair of 19-inch ViewSonic ThinEdge VP191b LCD monitors deployed side by side to increase workspace and has enjoyed many compliments from customers on the viewing quality they provide. The thin-bezel monitors have proved to be highly portable, versatile, and durable—perfect for the small space. Rage Systems has noticed improvements in both efficiency and productivity with the new LCD monitors.

“Because we are price conscious for our customers we suggested the ViewSonic VP191b LCD monitors.”
— Bruce Rayner, TimeLine Designs

“Rage Systems could get two ViewSonic monitors for less than the price of one of the competing display systems and have the added benefit of a larger viewing area”
Bruce Rayner Owner TimeLine Designs

The customer
Based in Hudson, NH, the crew of Rage Systems work all over the country in their 50-foot, custom-built fifth wheel trailer. Rage Systems’ specialty is doing multimedia design and editing work on location from the trailer, which is a sound-proofed, self-contained multimedia editing studio. The crew travels to sporting events around the country, parks the trailer, and gets to work editing videos for company websites or other uses.

The reseller
TimeLine Designs has been selling customized Media 100 systems for the last nine years. Media 100 is a leading provider of advanced media editing systems that provide creative professionals the equipment needed to quickly edit and create unlimited composite layers of video content using personal workstations. Although based in Nevada City, California, TimeLine Design’s storefront is the internet, and they do custom work for customers around the globe.

The challenge
Brad Munroe, owner of Rage Systems, had a video editing system that was being phased out because the current upgrade path no longer met their needs. Munroe’s parameters for a new system were very strict. When your business is contained in a 50-foot trailer that’s constantly on the move, things like being compact, lightweight and sturdy are important. His vision was to design a modular editing system based on the Media 100 platform that could be outfitted into a rack, and removed from the trailer and shipped when needed.

The solution

Munroe originally thought that an Apple Cinema Display would be the best solution for his problem, but Bruce Rayner, owner of Timeline Designs quickly convinced him otherwise.“ Because we are price conscious for our customers we suggested the ViewSonic VP191b LCD monitors,” Rayner said. “Rage Systems could get two ViewSonic monitors for less than the price of one of the competing display systems and have the added benefit of a larger viewing area.” Being ThinEdge LCD monitors, they are compact and lightweight—perfect for use in a mobile editing system—and have good picture quality, which is imperative when the client is approving the final product in the studio.

The results
To Rage Systems, the benefits of the new system have been numerous. Perhaps most impressive, Munroe says, is picture quality. He frequently gets compliments from clients on the clarity of the image and the large viewing area. The very thin black edge around each monitor makes putting two monitors side by side a viable and beneficial option for creating a larger viewing area. Munroe has noticed improvements in his efficiency and productivity.” Being able to flip the screen from horizontal to vertical is also a big plus,” Munroe says. The system is easily portable, and even made a trip to Hawaii. Despite its extensive travel and use, the equipment hasn’t required any service.
